When you were growing up, did you have the kind of mother that would say, “Don’t run with scissors.”, or “Don’t swim until you’ve let your food settle for half hour.”, or “Don’t stick things in the electric socket”? Did you think she was annoying and told yourself, “I’ll never be like that when I’m a parent? Well, today I wish I would have been more that type of mom to the peanut.
We were at Wal-Mart (what’s new?), just grabbing a few things, and we let
the peanut stand in the grocery cart. We normally let her sit in the basket as she throws a royal fit when you put her in the seat and buckle her in. Yeah, she’s really into freedom these days. So, to avoid the whole mess, we let her sit in the basket and go through my purse. It’s good for about 7 minutes to run in, get what you need and get out of dodge. Well, today, our 7 minutes came a lot faster than we were expecting.
We were in the garden section, yeah, the one with cement floors, and I was on one end looking at patio furniture and my husband on the other with the peanut looking at grills. Suddenly I hear my husband yelling, “Amy, get over here.” I thought he wanted me to look at a grill so I’m taking my time when I hear a panicked, “Get over here NOW!!” At that point I had a feeling I knew what happened.
By the time I got there the peanut’s head was all black and blue and she was just screaming. Oh, it was horrible. Stuff was coming out her nose and she was a bit bloodied. So, back to the ER we went. I tell ya, that place loves us! She had to get a CT scan and fortunately she is a ok. Just some bumps and bruises and a bloody nose.
Oh, and we picked up some humble pie on the way out the door.

Oh Amy Thank God nothing bad happened, it’s just awful. I see kids falling off those carts all the time and I just want to scream. Well dear, I am glad everything is fine. There is an angel looking over little children for sure or they would be all gone. God bless you Amy, hug Pauline
Ouch! Hard lesson learned- for all of you 😦
My mom wasn’t one of those fussy ones- we didn’t wear seat belts, she let us wander around town on our own (& it was a big city- Berkeley), wasn’t real vigilent- I’m sometimes surprised we all made it to adulthood 😛
I’m definitely more cautious then my mother was & I’ve been blessed with fairly easy kids, who didn’t pitch fits over restrictions- at least not until they were teens 🙂 Plus, being one of 6 children, I have a high tolerance to kid whining & have mastered the “Mom means it” look, which quells any arguements post haste!
Oh Amy, That is so scary! Glad she is all right.
We had a close call at Michaels. Lindsay was strapped in the basket, but it was a really unstable light basket, Josh was on the side hanging on and tipped the whole cart over. Luckily a man from behind me in line was quick and got her before she hit the floor. Scared me to death!

scary! poor little peanut…how is she feeling now? i can relate to having a “stubborn” child when it comes to sitting in the seat, etc…but with practice elizabeth is doing such a better job…she is so funny…i frequently tell her, “you need to listen and be obedient to mommy”…and she is finally starting to respond to that particular command. she stops, looks at me like “do i really have to…” and then reluctantly does what she is asked. we definitely can’t let her sit in the basket of the cart…mostly because she would have EVERYTHING opened and rummaged through before we got to the checkout!
Oh NO! Bless her heart! (And yours too!) That is such a fear of mine! My little one is so into climbing in and out of things right now, I know it’s just a matter of time! I am SO glad she’s okay!
Glad to know that she is okay. My brother took a tumble out of a cart once…landed on his head. Ugh. Poor baby…I hope she isn’t too traumatized.
Yikes. That is the most frightening thing. I hate it when I see a child fall out of a cart. And I can’t believe with four kids it hasn’t been one of our thrills! So glad you peanut is fine. And don’t beat yourself up about it…now when she’s a mom she’ll have a good story for her kids.
So happy to hear the Peanut is fine. I am sure you will be stopping every mother you see with their child sitting in a cart to tell them your story! You seem to be that kind hearted!
